Anybody had an ambulance heater apart?

My ambulance heater burner has quit burning. This is the standard multi-fuel fired cylindrical air heater that's used, in one form or another, on various MVs. It appears that it's supposed to spray th fuel into some sort of a porous cup from which it burns, and there's a small fiberglass wick that goes to the igniter, which looks looks like a car cigarette lighter end. The cup, if that's what it is, is all coked up. When I attempted to clean it off, it pretty well disintegrated. I found a whole bunch of PNs and NSNs for this "burner assembly", but only one for sale on the Internet and the guy wants $175 for it.

I'm wondering if anybody here has torn one of these heaters apart and either fixed the burner cup using some other part or substance, or knows a source for these parts. I was burning fuel oil in it, which I thought it should have been made to handle just fine. Maybe it was already well-used and pretty much clogged and, like an aladin lamp, once it starts getting coked up, it gets worse fast. If this is something that needs replacing regularly, it seems like a person should be able to get just the porous cup, or make one out of something (soft firebrick? fiberglass? asbestos paper?) For the igniter wick, I'm thinking I might be able to use the wicks they have in those decorative oil "candles".
