AC genset to DC welder

I have an Onan generator from a motorhome I bought for the drivetrain. It is in nice shape and is a 6 KW unit, I believe. Can I easily modify it to use as a DC welder? I would love to have a portable DC welder. If possible, I would like to do this without eliminating the generator's ability to produce AC current. Thoughts, ideas, irrelivent statements?
