It would be interesting to hear what the wrench manufacturers have to say about the amount of extra torque they allow on their products before they break, and if they have any restrictions due to warranties, lawsuits, and the whole liability song & dance.
I personally like the old "Darlin, hold my beer, and watch me slide the greasy piece of water pipe over the wrench, while I rip the skin off'n my knuckles and bang my head on the underside of the transmission" method. At least when the wrench explodes, all the sharp and rapidly-moving parts are contained within the pipe for safe-keeping.
