My guess- machanical fans move too much air.

But they lack one safety feature: I threw a belt one time. Heard the ka-plang, so pulled over. Fan not spinning, generator was motorizing. So I got back up to freeway speed asap, and the air moving through the radiator was enough to blow the water pump around like a wind mill. Made it home without any overheating damage. Hmmm, maybe an A/C clutch on the damper pulley would work well at hi-way speed?
