Military vs civilian temp sender

I just got a military temperature sender from Memphis Equipment and it has a 1/2" IP thread on it. The hole in the head of my engine (M43) has a 1/4" IP thread. I thought it was a military engine because it still has the sealed ignition system. Did the M37/M43 use a different military temperature sender with a smaller thread on it? Or does this mean my engine or head has been swapped? I'd like to keep things fairly "correct" on this truck. For now I think I'll put together some kind of kludge with pipe fittings to make it fit, assuming that hot water will get to the sender, but I'd rather do it right. If the military heads had a 1/2" IP hole, then if I have the head off someday, I'll drill it and tap it to 1/2". Using the heater hose hole on top of the head doesn't help much because it's 3/8" IP, so I'd still need a mess of adapters and a tee.
