Yes, that's the scheme I remember reading about during the gas crisis, probably in Popular Mechanics or something like that. What I'm curious about is any information on the actual wood-powered trucks used during the war. What were they, how did they work, was it a factory set up or home-brew, are there any left, etc.? They might be the original "biofuel" vehicles. The day may come when I need to build a set-up like that. One thing we sure have plenty of around here is trees. I wonder what it would take to build a wood-powered chain saw.
