Alternative to centered rear end?

I was laying under my M-37 replacing the old surgical tubing I use to vent my diffs' and crank cases. Just as I was heading into nap mode, I wondered why I couldn't flip the rear axle to move the third member closer to the center output on the transfer case. This would mean stripping the axle housing, welding spring perches on the other side and installing the third member opposite of its stock position. The only concerns I could come up with would be: Still needing a new rear driveshaft and distorting the axle tubes when welding the perches on. Anyone thought about this before? ever tried it?
I want to stick with this axle housing as opposed to a centered because it has shafts from Daniel Tibus.
