There's a big difference in 2008...in 1970 you almost couldn't find a Japanese/Korean car in North America. We didn't have free trade. Who do you think free trade benefits? Big companies with enough money to set up shop in Mexico..that's who. Now we have a global economy & we can't compete with the likes of China while paying laborers $25/hr. That's why our cars are made in Mexico, our clothes & tools in China & our farms plowed by immigrants. In the US those immigrants are illegal...in Canada legal but either way, North Americans won't work for the wages that these people will work for...we just don't live the same way.
I'm sure there's an answer, it's just not as simple as firing everyone out.
I'd start by hiring enough people to stop new illegals from getting over the border.
To be honest...I'm not sure your government wants to stop them coming in.
Think about it...you have the technology to send a rocket down Saddam's chimney but you don't have the technology to monitor your own borders? I think you do.
