When the thermostat is closed, the water circulates within the block to ensure an even heat distribution throughout the block. If there is no bleeder hole (or similar bypass) in or very near the thermostat, the engine will in many cases boil before the coolant around the thermostat is warm enough to open. When it opens, the coolant flow is forced through the radiator.
