I am a Fire Captain for CDF. Ok let me explain this. We are now called CAL FIRE. We are the fire department for the State of California. We protect all the state owned land; land that doesn't belong to cities or the Forest Service. We also are the fire departments for 38 of California's 58 counties. We are the third largest fire department in the nation behind New York and Chicago.
We, up until last year, were known as California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, CDF for short.
I started in 1986 right out of high school as a volunteer in Riverside County. Then went to the Forest service for three years.
Then went to CDF as a firefighter for three years. Then to BLM for four years then back to USFS, then back to CDF, then back to USFS. I am now with CDF for good. I have 12 years with CDF and will end my career here in Tulare County. I have been a Captain for 6 years now and love it. I have a long way to go to retirement, but I just turned 40 last November, so I'm still having fun and enjoy working. I'm not hurting TOO BAD YET!
I took a short break and drove heavy haul truck cross country and fire was in my blood so I had to come back to it.
