I agree that looking at the plugs will tell you a lot, especially if one is a lot dirtier than the rest. They key is to make it a quick check, and not get hung up on futzing with the plugs unless something is obviously wrong. I've just seen to many people keep tweaking with the plugs (precise gap setting, trying different brands or heat ranges, etc, etc) when the problem is somewhere else. Spark plugs in 1950 were pretty basic and it doesn't take anything fancy to get a spark in these low-compression, low-RPM engines.
