""runs kid of sick" could be lots of things, but backfiring through the carb requires that a spark plug fire while an intake valve is open. No dirty plugs, flaky coil, or other electrical problems can cause that. It has to be a timing issue -- a plug is firing when an intake valve is open."

It most certainly could be a plug misfire causing it, causing poor engine performance which causes him to put his foot into it more to get the same power. This alone could cause timing differences via vacuum advance or mechanical advance of the distributer and then you are getting a spark when the intake valve is open. Could also depend on load. You dont have to have a spark to get fuel/air mixtures to ignite. Heat and compression alone can do that. Hot spots on the head area could also ignite fuel/air. All caused from poor tinming and or carb adjustments.

Then you start jacking with timing and now things are really screwed up.

Pull the plugs and look at them and see what they look like and work your way back to the distributer.

A cleaning and gap check doesnt cost a thing.
