If it started acting up in the first 5 miles after the tune up, then you probably broke something when you tuned it up. If it had been running decently before (why did you do the tune up?), a valve wouldn't happen suddenly stick or burn or the timing jump a notch just at the time when you tuned it up. About all that you could mess up when doing a tune up is the ignition, and the only thing you could mess up that would cause a backfire through the carb is the timing, most likely by putting the plug wires on wrong or taking the distributor out and putting it back in the wrong way.

The first time around, I missed the part where you said it started acting up as soon as you did the tune-up. I thought it had been a while. But still, check the compression. That'll tell you a lot, plus you'll have the numbers written down for future reference if you suspect something's gotten worse in the future.
