I had asked Bob what he thought was the reason the drive pins were "dead soft" rather than being hardened steel like the steel dowels I had purchased (which are not very expensive).
He had never talked to an engineer at Warn about that specific question, but speculated that it was for the reasons I listed on the original post.
That said, I got the strong impression that he felt that the old Warn hubs are the strongest hubs out there, based on some of his observations on the relative inner design weaknesses of the other brands of hubs.
I doubt that we will ever get a definitive answer from Warn as to hardness issue on the drive pins, as Warn simply does not seem interested, or able to comment on the old obsolete hubs, at least for the two times I have called them.
