There were four of them on that suspension setup, more commonly found on GMC 6 x 6 and DUKW.

The rods just hod the axle at a set distance from the pivot point. They work fine, but eventually the joint wears out and they can be a swine to remove as they are on a tapered pin which normally hasn't been moved since the factory installed it. Standard practice is to pull the nut and washer, put on a big load using something like a pry bar, and then impact it as well to break it loose.
