Blowing TailLight bulbs on M-37

I just bought a 1952 M37 and the rear taillight one side wasn't working so I replace the bulb (12v bulbs on left and right) and the light burned very bright. Hit my brakes and the bulb blew and my other light quite working also.

The question is why? I know the truck is 24v but ... I haven't a clue...

Can anyone help?
