I don't know what kind of off road'n your doing that a military axle with 5.83 gearing isn't good enough for. Add a locker to the rear end (front too for that matter). Any number of companies can make you up special axle shafts that are less prone to snapping. Sure sounds like you're trying to fix something that ain't broke. Take a good long look at the improvements that can be made to the stock axles before you toss them aside.
