The fuel "draining" back is more likely it boiling away. After you turn off your motor hot, look at your see-through unit, and you can see it boiling.

As far as being able to do something about it, I don't think there is anything that works, other than routing your line from the pump to the passenger fender, then across to the carb. Racers do this, but I wouldn't recommend it on a street driver. If you get hit on the right front fender, you can have a heck of a fire!

I think you may be suffering from early stages of what I went through on my 79. The darn truck would fire right up, and then at random, just stop running. I'd check the fuel, and the carb was dry. I replaced the fuel pump twice, and it would still do that. I finally got mad enough to pull the gas tank to see if someone had "deposited" something foreign in there when I discovered a small leak in the fuel line right where the line bends against the frame to run to the front. It didn't leak fuel, and it didn't produce any fumes, but there was just enough air sucking in there to null and void the fuel pump! A new fuel line system, and it's good as can be!

Check it out!
