A .22 can kill a human with the right shot placement. It can kill a mtn lion as well with the right placement, a rabbit too. Heck, you could throw a knife at it and kill it with the right placement. What about wrong placement?

Point being that yes it could kill it. It would definately run off and die several hours later if your lucky and if you shot it in the lungs or heart. If not lucky and you gut shot it, or hit it in the hind quarters, someone would paint a painting of it having its last supper --- YOU!

Its most appropriate to use the proper size gun, some sort of higher powered bigger bore like a 30 cal., be it a 30-30 or whatever. Kills it quickly, humanly, and minimizes the danger to you and anyone else in the woods. If you really want a small bore gun for it, I'd go with the .17 cal. ballistic point. At 2400 fps or so, its very fast and hits with a heck of a wallup (more ft.lbs than a 22), but then again I would never shoot a mtn lion with a small bore, specially in California where its illegal to hunt them, but not illegal to feed them.

In alaska, they say that if you bring a small gun into the bush, the bears love it because they often take it from you and use it to scratch with.
