Because that was pre-Daimler.
Daimler didn't grasp the entire western pickup concept, they killed the truck, they went for the ghetto-hip hop theme, (Germans like that for some reason, king of an Aryan irony) brought in a non American to design the Chrysler 300, it sold well, so they promoted him to head of truck design.
His styling trend is responsible for the poor selling cars and trucks you see now.
If Cerberus had any sense they'd fire him immediately and redesign everything he touched.
Hopefully they will as they have re-hired Tom Gale, to oversee the direction of the design department. Trouble is, they have millions of dollars invested in the ghetto designs, plants are tooled up for the next 2-3 years in production, so it's going to take time to rid the system of this junk...and Giles is still working there.
Several of the old designers left with Bob Lutz and now work at GM, ie: the HHR and Chevy Malibu...Daimler wrecked havoc on Chrysler and it will take years to flush the stupid out of the system....
