A lot of the stores around here discontinued it at the height of the meth scare a couple years ago. I don't think it was an Idaho law, but just local police pressure. I know I've seen regular old Red Devil lye in stores since then, but maybe only in the big city or Washington. Another equally ignorant thing the local "authorities" did in response to the meth scare was they destroyed all the chemistry lab ware from the old high school rather than sell it, on the theory that "somebody could use it to make meth". Is it any wonder that America is falling behind the rest of the world in science and innovation, when we have local school officials and police who think that way?
I still have a few pounds of lye sitting around so if you're down this way I'll give you some. It's not worth the hassle of haz-mat shipping, though. But I think if you checked big-city grocery stores, maybe in CdA or Spokane, you'd still find it. It's usually in the drain cleaner section.
