David is right on the money here. Here in Alaska most of the cars and trucks look like the QE2 coming down the road. We have learned through trial and error to first of all use quality relays. The Ford headlight switches are notoriously weak even when using relays. Also I always solder the connectors onto the wire, the crimp style connectors although quick and neat are just asking for trouble. Nine times out of ten if there is a problem it is a poor ground. More importantly I use a constant duty relay. It looks just like a starter relay, but is designed for constant duty use. They don't come cheap, but will last virtually forever. Don't waste your time on the cheaper relays with the spade terminals. And we use a separate relay for each set of lights. Overkill perhaps, but piece of mind is a wonderful thing.
