my current project is a 1980 groverbuilt diesel 28' skiff. its a hand built long island classic made by a family who took the prototype across the atlantic to prove its seaworthiness. it has a lehman diesel (awesome!) that i am bringing up to date on the maint schedule. 1700 hrs calls for replacement of the watercooled exhaust elbow. i bought the boat with 1900hrs. i was told by everyone who works on the lehmans that i would have to use ez outs on the bolts (they would snap) and i would have to remove the 20 bolts attaching the exhaust manifold so i could have the elbow bolts drilled out and helicoiled. i decided to give it a shot on my own first. used my batt powered sawzall to cut the bolt heads off and then removed the manifold. i then heated the bolts and cooled them with candle wax like paul said about 10 times each. took all afternoon, but once i was able to see air bubble from the threads as the wax displaced the rust, i knew i was home free. i then used a vice grips to grab the stubs and wiggled and then removed the bolts. thanks to pauls trick i'm in good shape to install a new elbow and save myself a problem at sea. the elbow was very thin in the area that fails so im ahead of the game. another thing to note is that as i heated the fasteners and the manifold, i tapped the hardware with a small hammer. it helped too. im really impressed with the lehman ford diesel. its 380 CI that produces 120 hp at 2500 rpm. you can cruise at 3 gals of diesel per hour. its a marinized ford tractor that is dead simple to work on. too long for the command car though. thanks paul!!!
