Your corvette probably had a lot more vacuum than my M43, with a big heavy-breathing V8 and a throttle that was most of the way closed most of the time. But those were the days of vacuum powered everything, even before they started adding various vacuum-powered smog valves. I remember our 69 olds 98 had a fancy thermostatic heater/AC system that ran entirely on vacuum.
