My old 67 W200 crew cab is making a gear howl sound similar to the one it made just before the rear end went out awhile back. That time, the pinion gear nut had backed itself out, thereby self-destructing the ring & pinion gears. This is a whole different rear end, and it only makes the noise when you go around a right turn. It runs pretty quiet when you're driving straight. Just went through all the wheel bearings, so I know it's not that. Any thoughts out there on what this could be?

Also, it currently has it's original Air Force issue slant 6. I need to upgrade to a V8 because the truck will very soon be needed to do some towing. I have a 70 383 with a mechanical clutch bellhousing (I'll need to convert that to a hydraulic clutch). I thinking about putting that in, but was wondering if I should put a 440 in instead. My question is, is there that much difference between the 383 and the 440 when it comes to towing torque?
