Bruce, I'm in a similar situation. I bought an old piece of history that has turned into a much longer term project.

Our "melting pot" culture brings all kinds of attitudes to the table for trade. During my years in Germany, I found that for most of the locals, they would rather see an object rust or rot into dust before taking a lower counter offer. The southern Europeans, on the other hand, consider anyone willing to pay asking price, without haggling, to be a fool for sure.

So which is "right". Freedom, purely and simply! I've gotten great tips on this forum and have also shook my head at some of the BS! But most guys who hang out here would give you the shirt off their back, if they thought you really needed help. You get to meet some of them at Fairfield each June, or at the regional events...cheers til then.
