You can find a very well developed alternative to almost every commercial application in the open source world. Need an office suite? There are several. Need graphic manipulation or layout, got those too. They even open and save in the proprietary formats you are used to using (.doc .xls .pdf .jpg ...) It's not just for linux, they have builds for the three major operating systems and sometimes many more. Do a little searching and try a few. Consider the old computer I saved from a dumpster that I'm using right now. I haven't turned back from my two year old experiment...
