Good information. Most answering machines have a similar feature, where somebody can activate the microphone remotely and listen in to whatever's going on in that room. The "hookswitch" on a modern phone merely asks the microprocessor to please consider disconnecting the phone from the wire, unlike in an old-style mechanical phone where it physically breaks the circuit.
