Engine question for a '54 to '56 Dodge truck

I found a 1/2 ton Dodge truck, vintage '54 to '56, that has V-8 emblems on it, and in the bed is a set of Poly V-8 valve covers. The rest of the engine is missing. My understanding of the Dodge time line is that the '57 Dodges were the first to get the poly engines. I always thought the earlier Dodge V-8 trucks came with baby hemi's. Could the poly V-8 be original in this truck, or could it have swapped out for a newer poly engine?
