Where's you get enough fir to do that bed for $30. Last time I checked, clear vertical grain doug fir was going for almost $10/bd ft, which comes out to $400-$500 for enough to do a truck bed, and more if you make it more than 3/4" thick. At today's prices for old growth fir, white oak would be cheaper and more durable. I would not use flat grain or 2nd-growth fir because it will twist and crack too much due to weathering and will rot too fast.
