I used a bolt section of old cold rolled tank steel salvaged from an oil refinery, 1/8 thick and welded 1 inch wide "U" channel to it underneath between bed ribs about foot apart. It’s light, and works well. I’ve hauled 6 loads of 3,000 + pounds of small landscaping rock with no deformity to the bed steel. I considered wood, but wanted something that would last a little longer and hold up better when using a shovel or carrying other heavy items. If you do something like this, you need 7/8 inch wood slats underneath the metal on top of each frame rib to get the original bed height which is 1 inch. If you don’t, you’ll have to fill the gas tank slow each time, because the fillneck angle will not be correct.
