We did not have any idea of the long term effects of radiation then, or how to shield our own people.
I believe that, at age 92, General Tibbets is the only Enola Gay crew member that did not die prematurely of cancer. My Uncle was on the ground crew that performed the post flight check on number 82 when she returned to the States. He along with all of his crew, contracted cancer, some immediately, some later in life. He always suspected that the plane was "hot", but he considered it his duty and privilege to work on that plane and 'Bockscar' number 77 which finished off Nagasaki.
