Here's what I found:
From http://books.google.com/books?id=1VHp-9VECxoC&pg=PA24&lpg=PA24&dq=%22hydraulic+brakes+were+invented%22&source=web&ots=MIMq8wVx9Y&sig=xHyuGyB4H81YrsdDDJwO58jBqvA:
"Hydraulic brakes were invented in 1918 in the California shop of Malcolm Loughead. He later changed the spelling of his name to Lockheed and he and his brother founded the aircraft company of that name. The Lockheed hydraulic brake first appeared on the 1921 Model A Duesenberg."

From http://www.duesenbergcustomcoach.com/home.html:

"Their first production car, the Duesenberg® Model A, introduced in 1921, was the first passenger car to have all-around hydraulic brakes and a straight 8 engine as standard features."

So there you have it. They also state that only 485 Duesenbergs of all models were ever built. No wonder the remaining ones are so expensive.
