Or do you just think "refinery equals water pollution"? An oil refinery is nothing but a big chemistry set, and chemists know how to reduce pollution to whatever degree you might want (or be willing to pay for in higher gas prices). The rules in the US are mighty strict. I highly doubt that any new discharge permits would allow anything remotely close to "poison", not that I'd want to drink out of Lake Michigan anyway. I'd like to know exactly how many pounds per year of what chemicals are going into the lake. "Poison our drinking water" is not a measurable fact. Discharge permits define measurable amounts of identifiable chemicals. That's the place to start.
