Actually, Freightliner (Daimler) purchased the heavy truck assets of Ford a few years back (1998) and changed the name of the division to Sterling to avoid confusion with both Ford's remaining vocational lines (F800 and smaller) and the existing Freightliner and Mercedes lines...

Although owned at one time by the same corporate parent, the Freightliner Division (and its subsequent divisions) had continued to remain independent of the Chrysler Divisions after the Daimler-Chrysler Merger (takeover...).

For that matter, according to a 10/5/2007 press release, Freightliner LLC will change its corporate name to Daimler Trucks North America LLC effective January 7, 2008. See the Freightliner website...

And, to jump back on a topic that was at an earlier part of this thread, Ford did own about five percent of Cummins stock but since divested thier holdings. Both Ford and Cummins used to have statements on their websites about this, but things have gotten rearanged. I had the text quoted in a post on this forum a couple of years ago... A Google search should pull the info up...

Hope this helps... :)
