It works just like the Erector Set transmission. Did your set have the big blue 110v motor with the attached transmission? Maybe that is what made be become a mechanic?
Anyways, the crash box was the first transmission I ever had apart. I had to swap casings just to get a PTO on the left side in my '41 command car, to put a winch on it. Way simple inside, just a few biiig parts. Like "Baby's First Transmission", from Fisher-Price.
