Manual steering gear box lubricant

Can the steering gear box be alright with grease At least till I repair the leakage of gear oil ? I know that Dodge trucks of the 1960s used grease in their steering gear box instead of gear oil. Better than nothing,I know,but can it maybe stay with grease or will this mess things up in the long run?
