I just go straight to registrar like GoDaddy.com to see if a domain name is taken. I've found too many that don't host a web page, but are still registered to somebody. Unfortunately there's a huge amount of squatting on every remotely-intelligible sounding domain name these days. Most of them are set to point to worthless ad pages that say meaningless things like "What you need, when you need it", that supposedly generate revenue for the domain owner whenever somebody clicks on them. Unfortunately, it's sort of like a gold rush -- you have to get in early and stake your claim even if you don't know there's any gold to be found. If there's any domain name you think you might want that isn't taken yet, especially if it's a .com, grab it while you can.
