I believe in all the listed things to do, but I'll throw in an extra. Yes it is time consuming, but I ALWAYS drop the oil pan to see what may be lying in it. You would be amazed at the stories this can tell about what kind of care the engine has recieved. When i got my 65 WM fire truck, it only had 16,000 miles on it. What came out of the oil pan I think you could pave a parking lot with. Pieces of metal that are bigger than a dime can be a good clue too......BANG!KAPOW! Very much cursing...,etc.
