A dwell meter would help. Wrong dwell will really jack stuff up. Also what direction does the distributor turn on a 315? Small block LA engines are clockwise and Big Blocks are counter clockwise. You might be 180 out if you dont know the direction!


Chris is right the dampener can slip giving you a bad reading.


Only other thing would be to put it on a vacuum gauge. Get the idle set and see how it starts and shuts off and fine tune from there. Sounds like you are so out of the ballpark it wont be fun without some of the timing tools needed.
