Have you checked the actual timing?

On angled plug heads, I used to do it with a long bolt (metric) in the #1 spark plug hole. First, make sure the bolt won't hit a valve. Then, screw bolt in, and turn engine by hand. Mark damper at pointer. Now, turn engine the other way until it hits the bolt. Mark damper. TDC is half way between the two marks.

Unless, you have a flat head, the use the hole over #6, and a stick and a dial indicator. Or a marked stick- go to a certain point on the stick, mark damper, pass tdc, go until stick drops to same point, mark damper. Half way between...

* Spark plugs have always been metric. I don't know why. But I do know that AC was founded by a guy who had been partners with his brother, making spark plugs. But he left to start his own company. The original company used the family's last name. He named the new company with his own initials- Adolphus Champion.
