Oil is a mystery to me, and it doesn't help that everybody has a different, and usually pretty strong, opinion about what's right for any given application. I'd like to think that the standards are all that matters and so long as it's the right viscosity and the service grade is at least as good as what was sold when the machine was news, it should be okay.

The one that still has me confused is the MIL-L-2105E gear oil spec. I have several 5-gallon buckets of it and just got a 55 gallon barrel cheap, and would like to use it in all my gearboxes. However lots of people say it will corrode the synchros and should only be used in differentials and non-synchro trannys. When I research it, however, I can't find anything in the mil specs or on any manufacturer's site saying it will eat brass.
