Our cat, Sprite, 1992-2007, is no longer with us. He had sudden kidney failure and was sent off by the Doc to cat heaven on Friday.

In the words of the vet who treated him over the years, he was "a dog in a cat costume."

As a kitten, I trained him to stay within the boundaries of our property, and he never strayed. He would follow me into the woods like a retriever, and could follow several difficult commands, such as "sit" and "shake." At 17 pounds, with an attitude, he was a formidable adversary.

As the resident Rodent Mitigation Officer, he enjoyed hunting small game and the occasional fawn, which he delighted in sneaking up on and spooking. He was an ardent hiker and outdoorsman, enjoying a good snowfall as much as relaxing in a tree, or by the pond, watching the turtles.

In the winter, he would enjoy watching the Nature Channel with his adoptive dad.

His sense of humor was often evident, for example when he would not let the dog (whom he openly despised) have her stuffed toy, often hiding it from her.

He was an astute observer of the automotive aesthetic, preferring to sit on the hoods of trucks, rather than cars.

He will be sorely missed.
