I had no problem with not putting one on, it would have been easier ;) The problem came when I CALEED THEM and said it WAS needed, then when another inspector came out said it wasn't. If they don't even know the codes at the office(at least keep it consistant) how am I supposed to know?

The bottom line to me is the codes shouldn't be regarded as secret shrine. It should be readily available online(free) with a national standard. There is NO reason for the vagueness in conditions/practices and vary state to state.

My dad was a builder and later taught carpentry at a vocational school. They built a house each year for hands on teaching for the students.

One year when the inspector came out he told the students to gather round as he had something to show them. He said, "This is one reason right here why inspectors are needed. Your tread and rise on this staircase is not right and needs to be redone as it's a 1/2 inch out of spec on the tread." My Dad told him this is the reason why you need to be present when inspectors come because they make mistakes. He then removed the 1/2 layer of OSB that he puts down to protect the steps during contruction. Needless to say the inspector quickly signed off and left.

Thanks for the explanation and I am in no way degrading professionals in the trade. Rules are needed to keep everything safe but it should not be left in a cloud of mystery. I'm positive more people are hurt/killed every year mowing grass but I doubt states will start standards on that. Kevin
