I should go in the static display one the next time I'm in Seattle. One of my big regrets in life that when they flew a B17 into Boeing Field a 10 or 15 years ago and took people for rides, I didn't take my father, no matter what it cost. I'll probably go sometime by myself if they have one taking people up in the air someplace near me, but I'll probably cry the whole time wishing the old man was there to sit at the navigator's desk and look up through the little plexiglass dome and tell me how it was over Germany when the air was full of contrails and flak and everybody had flak jackets on and the machine guns were rattling away. Of course we only hear the war stories from the men who made it back. The 8th air force had the highest casualty rate of any group in the war. I grew up on stories of bombing the ball bearing factories and the synthetic oil plants in the B17 they called the "big gas bird", and then all of a sudden one day he didn't want to talk about it any more and then a few years later he was gone. Yeah, I'm gonna go for a ride in one someday. Maybe bring 2nd Lt Don Sherman's silk map, navigator's headset, and a couple .50 cal rounds along for good luck.
