Building codes are the law. They are created by folks that should know best, professional associations rather than regular politicians. I can appreciate that.
What burns me up is that because they are created by professional organizations, and not the government, they are considered private intellectual property. This prohibits their free distribution on the web.
Building codes are the only laws I know of you MUST pay for to read. My library doesn't have the actual codes, just the local supplements. I'd love to read up and make an informed decision regarding my ability to do the work myself, but that $100 for the code would probably pay for most smaller jobs I need done.
I guess I get what I pay for.
