I had a 1950 Desoto with a Fluid Drive. From memory the transmission was a M6 or M7 ? Again, as I remember from the 1960's it had a shiftable 3 on the tree and a clutch and some type of torque converter. But you also could stop and sit at a light with your foot on the brake without pushing the clutch. Then hit the go pedal at a given speed, let off on the go pedal and it would shift by its self to high gear. You could also drive it like a conventional 3 on the tree. As I remember, it actually worked quite well. Maybe my Father Norm will remember more about this setup.
