If the motor doesn't develope full horsepower it could overheat and eventually burn up, and the breaker will eventually fail also. Ever seen a 'Stab-Loc' breaker fire?
They fuse closed and do not trip.
In my 40 years in the trade I've had to overrule many engineers, so title isn't a big deal to me, it carries more weight that you live in Idaho....= )
If you had stated 5' in your first post, that would have been better, but then I read many incomplete engineering specs...= )
He'll be fine with #8 wire or SO cord.
