The data plate on the motor says "208-230 volts, 5 HP, HZ 60, PH 1", among other information I can't decypher.
I want to wire it into my normal home power and need to know what ampperage the breaker should be, assumming it isn't a 3 phase unit.

This post indicates to me that Joel, by his own admission, is looking for help. Even though the ID plate is clear to me (not a licensed electrician, but I know enough to do my own), Joel still wonders about whether it's a single phase motor, and is asking for any suggestions. Mike made a good suggestion, citing it as "the safe and prudent course". It didn't sound to me like he was saying everyone here needs to hire an electrician. Not everyone here needs to hire a professional house mover to install a basement under his house, but there was a very unfortunate case brought up a few forums back about someone who probably should have. As has Mopar Norm, I have been in the building business doing custom homes as well as remodeling homes for nearly 40 years, both in Calif., and now in Idaho. I have seen some horrific electrical work, both done by pros and by homeowners. I also have seen some excellent work done by people in both categories. I still vote for the philosophy that this forum is here for those who ask for suggestions, and for those who offer suggestions. I cringe when I see those who are willing to offer suggestions ridiculed when they do. Thanks for listening. Jerry Henry
