Mine are both plugged in with a 20-amp 240 volt flat-bladed plug. I'm not sure why I did it that way -- I guess I thought I might need to move it to get behind it for something someday. If you want a more reliable plug, less likely to pull out by accident, you can use a twist-lok, but they're expensive. There's something in the code about motors having to be hard-wired above a certain number of HP, but I'm pretty sure that number is greater than 5. You didn't mention how many amps the circuit is that you ran for your welder, but even if it's only 20 amps, I'd say it'll probably be fine since you're right next to the panel so the voltage drop will be minimal. Worst case scenario is that the breaker will trip when running the compressor hard, like for sand-blasting, in which case you can go ahead and add a 30-amp circuit.
